Der Film eröffnet mit einem Mann, dessen Körper übersäht ist mit Tattoos, wie er sich durch einen Karneval kämpft. Schliesslich drückt er sich an seinen Fans vorbei, hin zu einem Metallkäfig. Das ist so ein Anfang, der auf ganz viel schliessen lässt! Niemand würde so etwas inszenieren, hätte er nicht noch eine Menge artifizieller Ideen im Gepäck! Der Mann setzt seinen Helm auf und schwingt sich auf sein Cross-Motorrad. Zusammen mit zwei anderen Fahrern rast er wie irre umher innerhalb des Käfigs. Wieder draussen auf dem Jahrmarkt trifft er Romina (Eva Mendes), mit der er einen One Night Stand hatte. Davon ist mehr als eine Erinnerung geblieben, denn Romina wurde schwanger und zieht jetzt ihren gemeinsamen Sohn gross. Der Stuntfahrer heisst Luke (Ryan Gosling) und versucht sich fortan, in das Leben von Mutter und Sohn zu drängen. Doch Romina hat bereits einen neuen Freund. Doch um wirklich für seinen Sohn zu sorgen, braucht Luke Geld. Gemeinsam mit seinem Kumpel Robin (Ben Mendelsohn) beginnt er, Banken zu überfallen, um anschliessend die Polizei mit seinem Motorrad abzuhängen. Doch wie durch einen Wink des Schicksals trifft er auf den Polizisten Avery (Bradley Cooper). Eine kurze Zeit verbringen beide in einem Raum, doch der soll ihr Leben und das ihrer Söhne für immer verändern. Später versuchen Averys Kollegen ihn in ihr Geschäft der Korruption und des Drogenhandels einweihen, so dass er sich seinerseits entscheiden muss, was für eine Art Vater er sein will. Diese Parallelhandlung stellt den zweiten Akt des Films dar. Der ungemein begabte Derek Cianfrance hat hier einen sehr selbstbewussten epischen Film vorgelegt. Er spielt in der Working-Class und es treten solche Menschen auf, die sich abends, bevor sie zu Bett gehen, bereits Sorgen um Morgen machen müssen. Obwohl Ryan Gosling und Bradley Cooper auftreten ist The Place Beyond The Pines alles, nur kein Star-Vehikel. Das hier ist ein Film, der echte Grösse beweist! Ein Film in drei Akten, von denen jeder eine überraschende, ja schockierende Wendung nimmt. Gosling, mit all seinen Tattoos im knappen T-Shirt wirkt wie ein eingesperrtes Tier, das auf seinen Moment lauert. Mendes zeigt die beste Leistung ihrer Karriere als Frau, die etwas aus ihrem Leben machen will und wieder die Schule besucht - doch sie fühlt sich angezogen von Luke, der offensichtlich der falsche Mann ist. Cooper mit furchtbarem Haarschnitt, spielt einen Cop, der glaubt er sei clever. Der dritte Akt gehört schliesslich den Söhnen von Luke und Avery, doch diese Geschichte fesselt weniger als die ersten beiden Drittel des Epos. Applaus für Derek Cianfrance und sein Team, die hier grosse Ambitionen verkünden und auch einlösen. Die Bilder, die Musik, das Schauspiel, hier wirkt nichts ängstlich oder zögerlich, The Place Beyond The Pines lohnt sich in jeder Sekunde der 140 Minuten! -
The film opens with a man whose body is covered with tattoos as he fights his way through a carnival. Finally he pushes himself past his fans, towards a metal cage. That's such a beginning, which suggests a lot! Nobody would stage something like this if he didn't have a lot of artificial ideas in his luggage! The man puts on his helmet and swings himself onto his cross motorcycle. Together with two other riders he races like crazy around inside the cage. Again outside at the fair he meets Romina (Eva Mendes), with whom he had a One Night Stand. More than a memory of this has remained, because Romina became pregnant and is now raising her son. The stunt driver's name is Luke (Ryan Gosling) and from now on he tries to push himself into the life of mother and son. But Romina already has a new boyfriend. But to really take care of his son, Luke needs money. Together with his buddy Robin (Ben Mendelsohn) he starts robbing banks, only to hang out the police with his motorcycle. But as if by a hint of fate he meets the policeman Avery (Bradley Cooper). Both spend a short time in one room, but he is supposed to change their lives and those of their sons forever. Later, Avery's colleagues try to introduce him to their business of corruption and drug trafficking, so that he has to decide what kind of father he wants to be. This parallel plot represents the second act of the film. The incredibly talented Derek Cianfrance has presented a very self-confident epic film. He plays in the working class and such people appear who have to worry about tomorrow in the evening before they go to bed. Although Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper appear, The Place Beyond The Pines is everything but a star vehicle. This is a movie that proves true greatness! A film in three acts, each of which takes a surprising, even shocking turn. Gosling, with all his tattoos in a tight T-shirt, looks like a caged animal lurking for his moment. Mendes shows the best performance of her career as a woman who wants to make something out of her life and attends school again - but she feels attracted to Luke, who is obviously the wrong man. Cooper, with a terrible haircut, plays a cop who thinks he's clever. The third act finally belongs to the sons of Luke and Avery, but this story captivates less than the first two thirds of the epic. Applause for Derek Cianfrance and his team, who announce and redeem great ambitions here. The pictures, the music, the acting, here nothing seems anxious or hesitant, The Place Beyond The Pines is worth every second of the 140 minutes!
