The Man Who Knew Infinity - Die Poesie des Unendlichen (2015) (Rating 6,3) DVD-

Die aussergewöhnliche Lebensgeschichte des aus Madras, Indien stammenden Mathematik-Genies Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) scheint nur drauf gewartet zu haben, endlich einmal erzählt zu werden! Ein junger Mann ohne Ausbildung sucht den Austausch mit europäischen Mathematikern, um ihnen seine Formeln vorzustellen. Professor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons) ist davon so begeistert, dass er ihn 1914 nach Cambridge einlädt. Während ihrer Zusammenarbeit wird der Quereinsteiger zum "Fellow Of The Royal Society" gewählt, bevor er zurückgeht nach Indien und mit nur 33 Jahren verstirbt. Ein paar grundlegende Fakten aber ändert dieses Biopic einfach: Aus dem geförderten Kind aus der Kaste der Brahmanen wird hier ein Junge aus dem Slums. Im Film führt dann das englische Wetter bei ihm zu Tuberkolose. Rassismus, so der Film, ist Schuld daran, dass das Genie fast wahnsinnig wird. Nebenbei wird der Konflik des atheistischen Förderers und seines religiösen Schülers angedeutet: Auf die Forderung, seine Rechnungen zu beweisen, setzt der nur das Vertrauen in Gott. So erscheint der Mathematiker in diesem Portrait als tragischer Romantiker, als reines Opfer. Daneben wirkt die Menschenscheue des Professors auch nur wie eine Behauptung des Films, die wir gar nicht selbst feststellen können. Wie wärs denn mit einer eigenen Erforschung Ramanujans, die vielleicht ergiebiger ist als der Film? - The extraordinary life story of the mathematics genius Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel), who comes from Madras, India, seems to have been waiting to finally be told! A young man without education is looking for an exchange with European mathematicians to present his formulas. Professor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons) is so enthusiastic about this that he invites him to Cambridge in 1914. During their collaboration, the career changer is elected a "Fellow Of The Royal Society" before he returns to India and dies at the age of 33. But a few basic facts simply change this biopic: The sponsored child from the Brahmin caste becomes a boy from the slums. In the film the English weather leads to tuberculosis. Racism, according to the film, is to blame for the genius almost going insane. Besides, the conflict of the atheistic promoter and his religious disciple is hinted at: he only places his trust in God on the demand to prove his calculations. Thus the mathematician appears in this portrait as a tragic romantic, a pure victim. Besides, the shyness of the professor only seems like an assertion of the film, which we can't determine for ourselves. How about an own exploration of Ramanujan, which is perhaps more productive than the film?
