The Gospel According to St. Matthew wurde von Pasolini, einem homosexuellen Atheisten, der an Marx glaubt, gedreht. Und es ist bestimmt der gewaltigste religiöse Film geworden, den ich je gesehen habe! Nichts desto trotz; der Film wurde von einem "Ungläubigen" gemacht. Der aber lässt alles weg, was so störend ist an religiösen Filmen: Weder predigt er, noch sentimentalisiert er, noch verherrlicht oder romantisiert er. Wer etwas über Pasolini liest, bemerkt, dass er sich viel mehr als Dichter, denn als Regisseur sah. Seine Filme wirken über Bilder. Ich würde nicht einmal von Dialogen sprechen. Es ist eine Art eigens entworfener Sprache. The Gospel According to St. Matthew funktioniert so als ob ein Chronist Jesus-Christus von Beginn an folgt, um seine Geschichte zu erzählen. Im Stil des italienischen Neorealismus. Die Neorealisten glaubten, dass ganz normale Menschen viel besser wirken als Schauspieler. Das heisst, am besten können ganz normale Menschen Charaktere verkörpern. Nicht jeden, aber die Rolle, für die sie geboren wurden. Jesus-Christus wird von Enrique Irazoqui verkörpert. Du wirst Enrique Irazoqui in keinem anderen Film sehen. Naja fast. Während der 60er drehte er laut imdb noch zwei weitere Filme. In den Credits wirst du weiterhin entdecken, dass Maria von der Mutter Pasolinis gespielt wird. Gefilmt wurde ohne Drehbuch. Lea, die gerade den Film über unseren Laden inszeniert, meinte mal zu mir, dass man besser ohne vorgefertigte Dialoge filmt, wenn man Laiendarsteller besetzt. Pasolinis Jesus ist ein Klassenkämpfer. Einer, der die Gesellschaft in seinen Predigten zurecht weist. Er weist eine Gesellschaft zurecht, welche die Reichen und Mächtigen über die Armen und Bedürftigen stellt. Manchmal klingt er fast wie ein Gewerkschafter. All das hat Pasolini in krasser Einfachheit erzählt. Nie protzt der Film mit Sensationen, etwa, wenn Jesus über das Wasser geht. Die Priester, die Jesus verurteilen, wirken nicht boshaft, sondern gelehrt und schwerfällig. Dann die Kreuzigung. Ihr fehlt jede Gewalt. Fast, dass sie herunter gespielt wird (wir kennen ja auch neuere Jesus "Splatter" Film, oder?). Trotzdem wirkt die Kreuzigungs-Szene durch ihren nüchternen Realismus hart. Christus starb, um den Menschen ihre Erbsünde zu nehmen. Allen Menschen? In Pasolinis Version vielleicht aber auch eher nur denen, die im politischen Spektrum links stehen... - The Gospel According to St. Matthew was filmed by Pasolini, a homosexual atheist who believes in Marx. In the credits you will also discover that Maria is played by the mother of Pasolini. It was filmed without a script. Lea, who is currently directing the film about our shop, once told me that it is better to film without ready-made dialogues when casting amateur actors. Pasolini's Jesus is a class warrior. One who rebukes society in his sermons. He rebukes a society that puts the rich and powerful above the poor and needy. Sometimes he almost sounds like a trade unionist. Pasolini told all this in blatant simplicity. The film never flaunts sensations, such as when Jesus walks on water. The priests who condemn Jesus do not appear malicious, but learned and ponderous. Then the crucifixion. It lacks any violence. Almost that it is played down (we also know newer Jesus "Splatter" film, don't we?). Nevertheless, the crucifixion scene seems hard because of its sober realism. Christ died to take away the original sin of the people. All people? In Pasolini's version maybe only those who are on the left side of the political spectrum...
