Gleich zu Beginn macht diese psychodelische Adaption von Emily Brontes Roman deutlich, dass sie nach eigenen Regeln spielt. Wir hören das Stöhnen eines Mannes, doch der Bildschirm bleibt dunkel. Holz knarzt, das Stöhnen wird lauter. Endlich können wir etwas erkennen, aber es ist kein sexueller Akt. Es ist ein Mann, der mit dem Tod ringt. Ein subversiver Auftakt! Dieser einzige Roman von Bronte handelt - wie wir wissen - von der unglücklichen Geschichte zweier Liebender namens Catherine (Margot Robbie) und Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi) im England des späten 18. Jahrhunderts. Nach dieser tollen Szene aber agiert diese freie, sehr freie Adaption zaghafter, sogar mit bedrückend lauen Emotionen.
