Hier kommt ein formal strenger und wunderschöner Film über eine Episode im Leben von Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler). Thomas Mann trifft 1949 in Frankfurt ein, wird gebeten an einer Veranstaltung im Nachkriegs-Deutschland teil zu nehmen. In einem Telefonat skizziert Sohn Klaus (August Diehl) im Telefon Gespräch mit Erika (Sandra Hüller) die Themen, die im weiteren Verlauf behandelt werden. Was bedeutet es für Thomas und Erika, die bereits in den USA leben, nach Deutschland zurück zu kehren? Was bedeutet es für ihr Land? Thomas reist nicht nur in den Westen, sondern auch den Osten Deutschlands. Ist er nun ein heimkehrender Held? Oder gar ein Verräter? Und inmitten all der Zerstörung, welche Rolle kann da Kunst überhaupt noch spielen? Fatherland wirkt wie ein Ort ohne jede Wärme. Im Mittelpunkt steht Erika (Sandra Hüller), die die Folgen eines Krieges verarbeitet, an dem ihre Familie nicht einmal teil nahm. All das wird überraschend kurz dargestellt; der Film dauert nur etwa 80 Minuten. In Frankfurt werden die Manns fasst verhört (und dann wiederum in Chören besungen). Die schwierigen Fragen können sich die Deutschen zu der Zeit noch nicht stellen. In Fatherland gibt es keine leichten Antworten. Das macht Fatherland zwar etwas unbefriedigend, dafür klingt der Film aber viel länger nach in unseren Köpfen. - Here is a beautifully crafted film, with a rigorous formal structure, about an episode in the life of Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler). Thomas Mann arrives in Frankfurt in 1949 and is asked to take part in an event in post-war Germany. In a telephone conversation, his son Klaus (August Diehl) outlines to Erika (Sandra Hüller) the topics that will be discussed later on. What does it mean for Thomas and Erika, who are already living in the USA, to return to Germany? What does this mean for her country? Thomas travels not only to the west but also to the east of Germany. Is he now a returning hero? Or even a traitor? And amidst all the destruction, what role can art possibly still play? Fatherland feels like a place devoid of any warmth. At its heart is Erika (Sandra Hüller), who is coming to terms with the aftermath of a war in which her family did not even take part. All of this is portrayed in a surprisingly short space of time; the film lasts only about 80 minutes. In Frankfurt, the Manns are subjected to intense questioning (and then, in turn, celebrated in song). At that time, the Germans are not yet able to ask themselves the difficult questions. In *Fatherland*, there are no easy answers. Whilst this makes *Fatherland* somewhat unsatisfying, the film lingers in our minds for much longer as a result.
