- (NOMADENKINO SHOWS THE FILM ON 29.8.18 AT 20.45 AT THE HOLZMARKT, HOLZMARKTSTR. 25, 10243 BERLIN) A dazzling artist and dandy! One who created opulent film sets and glamorous photographs. How do you honor someone like that in a movie? Sir Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was as outstanding an artist as his work. One that just wasn't suited for an ordinary life. Recently I asked around in our video store, the Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo - but nobody knew the person Cecil. But his recordings of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Lisa Immordiio Vreeland now sets him a monument. It takes us into the past, the era of German Expressionism (which we Berliners still mourn!) or into the world of Hollywood films of the 50s. Cecil was from London, but after abandoning his education he went to the USA, where his art adorned the covers of Vogue. Nevertheless he remained English, even became the royal family's court photographer. Cecil loved country houses where he spent his time with friends. Unfortunately, Cecil was also anti-Semitic, indicated this in his work and received Vogue's dismissal. He had to rehabilitate himself as a war photographer and apologized for his thinking with arrogance. We have to think of Cecil as a torn man. Gay, wide open at work, covered privately. In fact, he had an erotic liaison with Greta Garbo. So how do you get close to a person like that? By allowing negative opinions to have their say. George Cukor, THE woman director of old Hollywood, didn't like Cecil. Such voices arouse our interest in this ambivalent figure, whose art continues to this day.
