(Wir stellen nicht die Filme, nur die links zur Verfügung) - The film team is accommodated in an old building, including the apartment of the couple from Philippe Garrel's new film In The Shadow Of Women (L'ombre des femmes). Garrel shoots only in the surrounding area, in the surrounding streets and cafes. Strictly chronological, as he always did. It enables the actors to empathize with the emotions of their characters. Garrel works in an old-fashioned way, using 35mm film footage even for shooting and editing. Maybe he's the last one to do it like that? He always hired only the best cameramen: Raoul Coutard, William Lubtchansky and Willy Kurant. For In The Shadow Of Women Garrel got an original: Renato Berta, who filmed with Godard, Resnais or Straub. Before each scene, Garrel tries out his actors extensively - while they act in front of the camera, he stands directly in front of them. For a long time Garrel had produced his films on his own and almost without means, but since the 80s he took classical narration more and more seriously. Today you can see how strongly a Garrel film is influenced by painting, but you can also "consume" it wonderfully. He is the last of the Nouvelle Vague and every film looks back. Philippe Garrel, who lived with Nico from Velvet Underground, knows how to stylise himself and his late work. He reaches a young audience that wants one thing above all else: nostalgia! Which modern French films still seek the tradition of the Nouvelle Vague? Is there a kind of Retro Nouvelle Vague? (We don't provide the films, only the links)
