Irgendwann 1969 in Hollywood. Was kommt als nächstes? - The title of Quentin Tarantino's ninth film is reminiscent of his favorite genre. Or one of his many favorite genres: The Western. And just like the Western, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood sounds like an ode to times gone by that Tarantino only knows from books (and movies). An elegy of yesterday! Of course Tarantino didn't learn this at any university, but in a video store. He didn't use secondary literature. The result was a typical Tarantino, but also a little more than we expected. Or have we ever seen an elegy by Tarantino? It's the year 1969, a weekend in February. Performance by TV actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his long-time stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Rick used to be a star, now he's middle-aged. So he is encouraged (by Al Pacino's Marvin Schwarzs) to go to Italy to shoot spaghetti westerns. Cliff, on the other hand, does not suffer from such problems of the transience of fame. Around her, famous Hollywood stars like Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis), Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha) and Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) appear. But characters like Sharon Tate seem less real than an idea: at Hollywood parties, she shines as the coming star (as opposed to the burning Rick). Rick gives Tarantino's film the beauty of melancholy. His whole film seems a bit like a dream. Sometime in 1969 in Hollywood. In the midst of classic cars and pop songs on the radio. But it's not so much about the era, but about the movies of that era! It shows a place that has disappeared - but in the way films would show it. Not historians. For those who are looking for typical Tarantino dialogues: They are also more dreamy, as in Jackie Brown. For the first time one thinks that Tarantino itself has aged. I was always afraid for "young" directors like him! Wouldn't they seem ridiculous at some point? Tarantino didn't. He IS Rick Dalton. One who still talks enthusiastically about living next door to the director of "Rosemary's Baby". But what will become of him? What's next? A mixture of longing and fading optimism. In contrast to Rick, we viewers of course know what will happen next, at least in the movie: We see the pregnant Sharon Tate, it's the year 1969... Once Ipon A Time In Hollywood is a work that we will love! Not a short-term hit running in Cineplex Treptower Park. We will talk about it for a long time and yes, we will discuss it. The older Tarantino has that in common with the younger one: The power to fire us up! Oh there is only more of his blow...
