November 2015. - This film is about the complex and traumatic aftermath of the Bataclan attack. How do people deal with such an event? It is night in Paris. A woman and a man walk through the empty streets, wrapped in a glittering gold foil. Their names are Céline (Noémie Merlant) and Ramón (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) and they look exhausted, as if they had been through something terrible. We have no idea what they have just experienced. Small particles in the air. What is all this? We find out later. It is gunpowder and the haze of dead bodies. Isaki Lacuesta's film doesn't tell us all this in concrete terms, but with all the uncertainties inherent in human memory. It is 13 November 2015. The so-called IS carries out an attack in the Bataclan concert hall. 89 people die. One Year and One Night (the original Spanish title). It is about that one night and the year that followed. It is the year of memory and repression and mourning. Céline and Ramón approach it very differently. He tries to fathom everything, to reconstruct. She just wants to forget. The images are shaky, almost erratic, so we too are drawn into the chaos. This story cannot be told in a linear fashion. Again and again, memories of Bataclan interrupt the narrative flow. The perceptions are contradictory. It is impossible to get an overview. The memory itself becomes a space. A space in which one must somehow continue to live. In the process, traumatised people act as unreliable narrators, so that we find it difficult to piece together what has happened. Probably we will never succeed...
