THE BEST MOVIES IN OUR VIDEO STORE! Peter Bogdanovichs Film über die grosse Depression wirkt wie ein Tribut an das Filmschaffen dieser Zeit. Wir erleben die Geschichte von Addie, eines kleinen Mädchens. Addie sieht die Welt genauso wie sie ist und das ist wohl der Grund, weshalb sie fast nie lächelt (obwohl sie sich aber auch nicht unterkriegen lässt!). Paper Moon beginnt am Grab ihrer Mutter, deren Interessen ganz bestimmt nicht der Tochter galten. Von einem Fotografen erfahren wir, dass Addies Mutter von der übelsten Sorte war. Addie selbst sieht aus wie ein Tomboy im Flannelhemd mit Kappe. Während der Beerdigung naht in letzter Minute ein uraltes Auto mit einem Bibelverkäufer, der unter Umständen Addies Vater sein könnte. Sein Name ist Moses und er wird gespielt von Ryan O'Neil. Beide verkaufen fortan Bibeln an Witwen, die angeblich die verstorbenen Männer bestellt hatten, wobei sich Addie dabei noch besser anstellt als ihr Lehrmeister. Der Bibelbetrug wird von Bogdanovich einerseits als Spiel benutzt, das die beiden zusammenschweisst - zum anderen ist es aber auch tief ergreifend. Tatum O'Neil ist der Star des Films, eine Art weiblicher Huckleberry Finn. Sie (tatsächlich die Tochter von Ryan O'Neil) ist gleichermassen klug und niedlich und es scheint, als ob sie gar nicht spielt. Es braucht für diese Rolle eine grosse Schauspielerin und Tatum O'Neil hält den ganzen Film zusammen. Ich denke, es wird dir genauso gehen wie mir, dass du dich über das erstaunliche Selbstbewusstsein wunderst, mit der sie ihre Rolle trägt. Ich jedenfalls war sehr beeindruckt, wieviel Tiefe sie ihrer Addie verleiht! Bogdanovich bedient sich des Stils klassischer Hollywood Filme, erlaubt seinen beiden Charakteren aber ein hohes Mass an Individualität. Nie hat man den Eindruck, dass beide der Feder eines Autoren der 30er entsprangen, sondern Bogdanovichs Gauner Pärchen wird im Film erlaubt, einfach so zu handeln, wie sie wollen. Paper Moon ist deshalb kein Verschnitt älterer Filme, sondern lebt ganz im Geist des New Hollywood Aufbruchs. Paper Moon ist für mich einer der schönsten Filme aller Zeiten. - Peter Bogdanovich's film about the Great Depression is like a tribute to the filmmaking of the time. We experience the story of Addie, a little girl. Addie sees the world just as it is and that's probably why she almost never smiles (although she can't get down either!). Paper Moon starts at her mother's grave, whose interests certainly weren't for her daughter. A photographer tells us that Addie's mother was the worst kind. Addie herself looks like a tomboy in a flannel shirt with a cap. During the funeral, an ancient car approaches at the last minute with a Bible salesman who could possibly be Addie's father. His name is Moses and he is played by Ryan O'Neil. Both sell Bibles to widows who allegedly ordered the deceased men, and Addie does even better than her teacher. The Bible deception is used by Bogdanovich on the one hand as a game that joins the two together - but on the other hand it is also deeply moving. Tatum O'Neil is the star of the movie, a kind of female Huckleberry Finn. She (actually Ryan O'Neil's daughter) is equally smart and cute and it seems as if she isn't playing at all. It takes a great actress for this role and Tatum O'Neil holds the whole movie together. I think you'll feel the same way as I do that you wonder about the amazing self-confidence with which she carries her role. I was very impressed with how much depth she gives to her Addie! Bogdanovich uses the style of classic Hollywood movies, but allows his two characters a high degree of individuality. You never get the impression that both were written by an author of the 30s, but Bogdanovich's crooks are allowed to act as they please. Paper Moon is therefore not a blend of older films, but lives entirely in the spirit of the New Hollywood dawn. For me, Paper Moon is one of the most beautiful films of all time.
