Das Leben ist natürlich viel schwieriger als im Kino und deshalb hat der mutige Schritt der Filmfigur aus The Purple Rose Of Cairo, den Film zu verlassen und von der Leinwand zu steigen, auch Konsequenzen. Die übrigen Filmfiguren müssen auf ihn warten und die Produktionsfirma macht sich Sorgen, dass dies kein Einzelfall bleibt. Zu schlechterletzt zieht auch noch der Schauspieler los, seine Figur zu suchen. Nun sind auf einmal zwei von ihm unterwegs und der eine trägt einen Tropen-Helm. Woody Allens Komödie spielt mit der Essenz von Phantasie und Realität. Jeff Daniels spielt den Helden aus The Purple Rose Of Cairo. Gewöhnlich besucht er Cocktail Parties und plant Reisen zum Nil. Er ist genial, hat aber doch ein Problem: Er weiss eben nur so viel wie seine Filmfigur. Mit Frauen kann er süss reden und hat gelernt, einen Filmkuss zu geben. Im entscheidenden Moment aber, blendet er sich aus, genau wie im Film. Die besten Momente erzielt Allen dadurch, dass seine Filmfigur eben nichts über das Leben weiss. Mia Farrow, die Frau wegen der er die Leinwand verliess, glaubt all das beheben zu können. Doch ihr beider (echtes) Leben wird von Filmproduzenten und Reportern ruiniert. Woody Allen hat den Konflikt, was wir zu sein versuchen und tatsächlich sind, bereits in früheren Filmen durchgespielt. The Purple Rose Of Cairo aber vollbringt das weniger "wissenschaftlich" als vielmehr entzückend - vom ersten bis zum letzten Moment! Nicht nur, weil The Purple Rose Of Cairo so charmant und witzig ist, sondern vor allem, weil der Film so intelligent ist! Keine der Figuren spricht gehobener als ein durchschnittlicher Filmstar der 30er Jahre - doch The Purple Rose Of Cairo wurde von Allen voller Erfindungsreichtum aufgebaut! All die Widersprüche seiner Figuren: Allen traut uns das zu, die auch für uns selbst zu finden. Während dieses Versuchs gibts genug zum Lachen und zum Nachdenken, schliesslich vergisst man ganz, im Kino zu sein... Genau wie Mia Farrow in The Purple Rose Of Cairo. -

But her two (real) lives are ruined by film producers and reporters. Woody Allen has already played through the conflict of what we try to be and actually are in earlier movies. The Purple Rose Of Cairo does this less "scientifically" than delightfully - from the first to the last moment! Not only because The Purple Rose Of Cairo is so charming and funny, but also because the movie is so intelligent! None of the characters speaks more highly than an average film star of the 30s - but The Purple Rose Of Cairo was built by Allen full of ingenuity! All the contradictions of his characters: Allen believes we can find them for ourselves. During this attempt there is enough to laugh and to think about, after all one forgets to be in the cinema... Just like Mia Farrow in The Purple Rose Of Cairo.
