- There is a lot of puke and urine to see in the social drama of the British photographer and director Richard Billingham. Vomit and urine in beautiful pictures. This photographic obsession of a grotesque couple inside their filthy apartment with yellowed wallpaper and dirty furniture represents one thing above all else: England. Billingham photographs them like statues, but unfortunately he can never stage them entirely as human beings. Perhaps because he follows his own photographs from the 90s? On them you could see the drunken Ray and the chain-smoking Liz. Two depressive people, of course. Although one was not allowed to make this diagnosis during the wedding of "Cool Britannia". This becomes clear in the movie. The photos are extended by dark, sometimes even funny vignettes. From a cinematic point of view it seems like a fragment. Somewhat frustrating. Patrick Romer plays Ray, who lives in a room of a social apartment. Later we notice that it was his family's apartment. Inherited, so to speak. He is all alone, lives exclusively in memories and feeds fluently. Then we meet him again with the young chain-smoking Liz in Dudley during the early 80s. A worrying guy and a tattooed woman. Everyone in the movie smokes. You see Lego bricks and old pay phones. Heavy Metal is on. Images. I would summarize it that way: Ray & Liz are abandoned. Retarded ones. Cut off from all of them and cut off from each other. They're England, but they're not.
