- If you don't like Rumble Fish, you will hate him. In Rumble Fish everything is surface, everything is style. The emotions, the impact of the film seem to be borrowed. It's unusual in Hollywood to make a film like Rumble Fish: ...a strangely experimental film that relies on a mundane story we've seen a hundred times before and whose ending is indifferent. If you care about the plot, you're in the wrong film. Coppola called it an "art film for teenagers". At the end you are sure to have seen a famous gang movie without knowing exactly which one it is? Rumble Fish is black and white, except for some piranhas in the pet shop. They are blue and red. Together they make up the American flag in the aquarium. The teenagers in the film, they are the piranhas, wear the clothes from the gang movies of the 50s and live in an American city that remains nameless. Rusty James (Matt Dillon) is their leader. Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke) is Rusty's big brother, who will teach him some sad lessons about life. Diane Lane plays Rusty's girlfriend, Dennis Hopper the drunken father. The characters meet, they fight or philosophize and sometimes they die. A death scene at Coppola's is like a free fall, out of the city. Every shot in the film is filled with cloud formations, smoke or fog by Coppola. In Rumble Fish, however, the clouds seem fake, as if they had come from a dream. Rumble Fish is original and daring, it is eccentric and - who else but Coppola could have made it?

Coppola Has a talent for shooting big budget Hollywood movies. Not for this kind of low budget arty fancy European wanna be like art movies His real talent is wasted here and not fully exploited You can sense that feel that It just doesnt pay off well for a high profile big director with the natural talent for the massive exotic megalomanic production to be making low calibre movies about street punks in the suburbs

A film that really emphasizes
A film that really emphasizes the relationship between brothers in a way that isn't presented very often. I wish films like these could be presented to the masses in a commercial way, but far too many people right them off as "experimental" or whatnot. I think it's a film that tells the truth and does it in a way that is both artist and thought-provoking.
