"I'll be right back" stellt in diesem Zusammenhang ein Todesurteil dar. - Scream breaks the oldest rule of cinema: the characters go to the cinema themselves, know the stars and call them by name in the film. Of course, the heroes of older films also went to the cinema. But back then it was about the act of going to the cinema itself. The characters of Scream have seen plenty of horror films and so they know what to do and what they'd better refrain from doing. "I'll be right back" represents a death sentence in this context. If a character promises that in horror films, they are guaranteed never to come back. Scream was unavoidable back in 1996, as the 90s was all about issues like "deconstructing film plots". An academic word that helps translate what everyone knows about movies anyway into absolutely incomprehensible language. Scream is about horror clichés. Instead of leaving it up to us to understand what we already know anyway, Scream translates the formulas. One of the teenagers in Scream gets upset that the victims of slashers always run to where there is no way out. Like the attic. Why are they so stupid? That's also why Scream starts with a young woman (Drew Barrymore) who is home alone. P.S. The casting of Barrymore may be considered an 80s quote in itself. We watch her as she saunters into the kitchen. There are many long knives hanging there... Later we meet another young woman (Neve Campbell) whose mother was murdered exactly a year ago tomorrow. Her father has gone away for the weekend... Rumours are circulating in her high school about some kind of murderous cult. The slasher is even wearing a Halloween costume. Suspects: the boyfriend, the father and many others. You notice; it's not about the plot at all. Scream is all about itself. It's about the characters, who know they are part of a plot. That's why they even speak as if they are part of a plot. Fortunately, the heroine has rejected the advances of her boyfriend. Everyone around her knows this. Because only virgins survive in horror films. Whereas you always get killed in the bedroom. During sex. The moment the protagonists realise that they are part of a plot, they choose role models from Hollywood films. Preferably ones that survive. But don't worry; Scream doesn't just mock horror movies, it works as one! To make everything even more transparent, a reporter (Courteney Cox) is even cast to ask the victims how it feels to be attacked by a slasher. Anyway, Scream offers quite a few inside jokes + quite a lot of gore to pass as a postmodern romp, but also as a shocker.
