Immer wieder wurde Screwball Komödie wiederbelebt, so verbeugt sich Peter Borganovich mit What´s up doc vor Bringing up baby und Nora Ephrons You've Got Mail vor The shop around the corner. - Screwball comedy from the 30s/40s is the fight of the sexes. In the snowball principle, the plot is over-twisted and led ad absurdum. The last remnants of the silent film era sound like slapstick and the boundaries to farce are fluid. Frank Capra and Howard Hawks are the great masters of screwball comedy and Ernst Lubitsch has not done anything else since he left Babelsberg. It happened one night by Frank Capra is the first huge success, Clark Gable suddenly became famous as a boy from next door. Hawks Twentieth Century isn't quite as famous as Bringing up baby, who unbelievably was a flop and Katherine Hepburn confirmed it as a poison. Her superior presence is all screwball, while Cary Grant can overact chaotically as only he can, without losing his dignity. 100 minutes of sex, even though it's not talked about at all! Hawks His girl Friday adds even more speed, even more gags, a firework of comedy! Lubitsch's screwball comedies are not as shrill as Hawks', but ironically elegant. Ninotschka, The shop around the corner, and Bluebeard's Eighth Wife are all to be discovered again and again and have a tongue-in-cheek charm! George Cukor created some screwball classics and above all The Philadelphia Story is remembered as a feast of quick-wittedness with the dream couple Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Not so well known is Preston Sturges, who - like Lubitsch - has dedicated himself to his very own kind of comedy. The lady Eve and The Palm Beach Story are pioneering works of a director and screenwriter in personal union, who paved the way for Orson Welles or Billy Wilder. His specialty are irreverent cynical dialogues that pretend there is no censorship at all! Screwball comedy was revived again and again, so Peter Borganovich bowed with What´s up doc before Bringing up baby and Nora Ephrons You've Got Mail before The shop around the corner. Just like Film Noir, Screwball Comedy is an immortal and incredibly popular invention!
