In The_Bride_Of_Frankenstein sagt das Monster einmal: "Alone. Bad. Friend. Good." Darum geht es in Guillermo del Toros letztem Märchen The Shape Of Water. Die Stimme des Erzählers führt uns ein: "If I spoke about it, what would I tell you" about what happened to the "princess without a voice"? Strickland hasst diesen Amphibien-Mann bzw. projiziert all seinen Hass in die Kreatur. The Shape Of Water ist surreal und märchenhaft. - In The_Bride_Of_Frankenstein the monster once says: "Alone. Bath. Friend. Good." That's what Guillermo del Toro's last fairy tale The Shape Of Water is about. The solitude of those who were born before their time. To those who are different. The Shape Of Water begins with a greenish shimmering underwater world, a kind of Atlantis. The narrator's voice introduces us: "If I spoke about it, what would I tell you" about what happened to the "princess without a voice"? The princess without a voice is the mute Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who cleans the underground corridors of a company called OCCAM. Zelda (Octavia Spencer) works with her, parrying Elisa's sign language with an outburst of words. Actually, Zelda's always talking. The head of the organization is Strickland (Michael Shannon), a sadist, paranoid, full of hatred for the Russians. We are in the early 1960s at the beginning of the Cold War. Everything is top secret and in camera, especially the creature the US military caught in the Amazon. A kind of water sprite (Doug Jones), now vegetating in an OCCAM tank. Strickland hates this amphibian man or projects all his hatred into the creature. He torments her with what he calls his "Alabama howdee-do", while the scientist Hoffstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg) asks for mercy for the amphibian man. But Elisa, who was abandoned as a child, feels magically attracted to this sad being. While the "monster" is a hateful spawn for Strickland, Elisa sees it as a kind of saviour figure on which she projects all her longing. The most poetic are the scenes in which she approaches Aquarius through sign language. Her ability to marvel, her tender sensuality, triumph over the sensual war of the Americans and Russians. Del Toro tells us what it means to be an outsider. Not only the amphibian man, but also the mute Elisa, the black Zelda and her gay friend Giles (Richard Jenkins) are strangers in this world. The Shape Of Water is a homage to the Creature features of the 50s, without being nostalgic. The Shape Of Water is surreal and magical. It's del Toro's most personal work. A good artist never tries to please his audience. He only delights himself and in the happiest case even his audience. Everything in Del Toro's The Shape Of Water is true and deeply humanistic. The Shape Of Water is dark and life-affirming, naive and cruel. His film is never cynical. He has everything that makes a good fairy tale. Not only for adults. (transl. deepl.com)
