"Got a problem and the problem is you" - The Sex Pistols. Denn was blieb ihm auch anderes übrig? - John Simon Ritchie was his real name. His father, a musician, left the family early. His mother dragged him to hippie festivals. Ritchie grew up in poverty in London's East End. At fifteen he had dropped out of school. At seventeen he called himself Sid Vicious, was the leader of the Sex Pistols and one of the most famous Englishmen. Nancy Spungen was a groupie from New York. And a businesswoman - unless she received the desired money from him. She urged him to make more of an effort and tried to get him a wider public. Who knows how Sid Vicious's career would have developed if Nancy Spungen hadn't bled to death that night? The great thing about Alex Cox's film is that we superficially experience a story of violence and excess, but underneath he has a lot of more subtle information at hand: Under the rivets and the leather hides a rather conventional relationship between an ambitious woman and a man who in reality is still a boy. You need: Spungen someone to mother, Vicious attention. Much they plan in the imagination. An "Amour Fou" that should culminate in suicide. But in truth they are even too lazy to go for pizza. How was that: One morning Vicious woke up at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, found Spunken's body. He was arrested under suspicion of murder and released on bail. Shortly thereafter he died of an overdose. And how did Spungen die? Actually stabbed to death by Vicious? Or quite profanely from an overdose? Cox also explains the punk phenomenon. Simplified: Punk is for me nothing more than an anti hippie attitude. And what does he say about film? Punk is the rejection of conventional society. "Got a problem and the problem is you" - The Sex Pistols. That's why they had to be even more blatant than their fans. The most infamous band in England. Sid Vicious didn't live long enough to actually get something like grounding. His fame also meant that he had to be broken. A big task for a child. He fought and puked and tried his best. It turned out to be a big and tender movie! Because what else did he have left? Exactly this circumstance makes Sid & Nancy such a sad movie! We don't have to get used to the actors Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb for a second. They ARE Sid & Nancy! Director Alex Cox does the little miracle of showing a story of noise and anger and yet telling a meticulous story right in the middle of it. And don't Sid & Nancy have the same wishes and dreams as all of us?
