- This is the story of a Mexican woman and her daughter who travel all the way to Los Angeles to talk some sense into a crazy American family. And I stress; the family father is played by Adam Sandler and he is NOT the craziest member of this family! Now if you are expecting an average sitcom, then be promised, Spanglish is much better than it seems! The mother of the American family is called Deborah Clasky (Tea Leoni) and she comes across as a powerhouse of multiple personalities. Friendly, enlightened, politically correct, but then again hysterical, manic and stumbling from one crisis to the next. I'm completely sure she can't relate to anyone and yet in the end she's somehow endearing. Deborah's mother Evelyn (Cloris Leachman) is a practising alcoholic and her problems start at lunchtime. Eventually, however, she sobers up (which no one notices) and is able to give her daughter important advice. Into this household now enter Flor (Paz Vega) and her daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce), Crisitina being the same age as Clasky's daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele). For six years Flor and Cristina have lived in the barrio, now they are venturing to the US (so Flor can finally earn more). The following is about all the family members, the daughters, Flor, Deborah and also John Clasky, the father. In the same way. Is there a common thread? Probably not. All the family members meet, almost lose their happiness until it is restored at the end. This includes some really wonderful scenes! Like the one where Flor finally wants to explain to the Claskys what she really thinks and why. At this point she doesn't speak English yet and Cristina acts as her interpreter. Paz Vega plays this with perfect comic timing as does Shelbie Bruce. When Flor waves her arms, Cristina does the same shortly after. She acts as translator and mime, yes shadow. Or Deborah's first orgasm, comparable to Meg Ryan's in When Harry Met Sally (DVD1461), except Tea Leoni makes you want to dial 911. Fortunately, Spanglish isn't so much about Flor being a maid either. Rather, she is the life force in the house. Flor heals Americans with her sunny disposition and normality. And if there is a step towards adultery, it is only so that it can be healed. Spanglish is about solutions and in the end you like all the characters and want to see it all again.
