So einfach! Genau deshalb langweilt mich Profi-Sport so sher. - Spike Lee is the poet of everyday life in modern cinema! He Got Game is about the best high school basketball player in America and would have had the makings of a great docu-drama - but instead Spike Lee has turned it into a film that breaks our hearts! Above all, it's about hopes and dreams! To the music of Aaron Copland we see children - black and white, rich and poor - playing basketball. So simple! You need nothing but a ball and a basket. And without giving anything away, I would like to refer to Spike Lee's fabulous final sequence. What he shows goes beyond words and plot! It sums up the core of the story (especially a treat in the age of netflix & co, as films are nothing but illustrated dialogue). Spike Lee, however, shows us images that transform! Enter Denzel Washington as Jake. He is in prison for the manslaughter of his wife. Jake's son Jesus (Ray Allen) is the nation's hero and so the governor makes Jake a proposition: the moment Jesus signs a statement of intent to study at Big State University (and especially play on the basketball team!) - Jake's sentence will be reduced. Jesus, however, is not happy to see Jake. Worse, he renounces his father. Sister Mary (Zelda Harris), who has forgiven Jake, is different. Jesus, on the other hand, is under pressure. Talent scouts from various colleges inquire daily and even his girlfriend Lala (Rosario Dawson) is involved - she knows she will be dropped. Jesus is offered thousands of dollars, whereas Jake's prospects are less rosy. He moves into a flophouse next door to a prostitute hooker (Milla Jovovich) who is being beaten up by her pimp. He tries to reach his son. Spike Lee calmly observes this on film. By the way: for all those who don't like sports films. This is much less about basketball than about capitalism. There is never any artificial drama created around boring game scenes. Rather, it is about the stakes, about the money - not about the sport. That's exactly why professional sport bores me so much. During the Fifa World Cup finals, I always find time to clean up the cellar of our bar. He Got Game has clearly realised that it's about modern warfare, about marketing. It may be that father and son win in the end. But so does the system.
