- Summer Of Sam was the first "Spike Lee Joint" without African-American actors. But Lee works on a theme that is familiar to "blacks" and other minorities: the scapegoat. It's the summer of 1977 in New York. The serial killer SAM is up to no good. All of New York is seized by the paranoid fear of the serial killer. In the Bronx, where the Italo Americans live, everyone who is different from the others is suspicious of being SAM. Summer Of Sam vibrates with guilt and fear and lust. And also with comedy! For once it's not about the murderer, but about his victims. SAM kills young brunette women - and the neighbourhood has formed into a kind of mob, ready to lynch the beast. One of the ugliest sides of man: To find someone guilty and to accuse someone who is different. Sometimes we also see SAM itself. But his appearances don't serve to build tension, but emphasize the human drama. The story focuses on the local mafia. They seem to know everyone in the Bronx. So SAM must be an acquaintance! He has to live among them, because it's hard for them to imagine someone living anywhere else at all. In the center, Vinny (John Leguizamo), married to Dionna (Mira Sorvino) - and serially unfaithful. Then there is Ritchie (Adrien Brody), who - although native - wears a punk Iroquois and speaks with a British accent. Just different! He dates Rubin (Jennifer Esposito), who dances naked in a club. All this serves as an introduction, because all the characters presented are supposed to change in the paranoid atmosphere of this summer. Lee himself comes from Brooklyn and loves these anecdotes about his city. The disco music of summer '77, the clothes, the nightclubs. All this seen through the eyes of an outsider. Ritchie? Lee himself? Finally, the police even turn to the neighbourhood mafia boss (Ben Gazzara). Could he find SAM? And during that time? Again and again Vinny cheats on his wife. Claims that he can't do "dirty" things with her anymore, because they are married now. And again and again he praises improvement. Ritchie, on the other hand, is committed to gay porn. 1977 - the climax of the sexual revolution! Shortly after Aids began... And every day the Italo Americans hang out in the neighborhood, discussing who SAM could be. Ritchie? He is different in every case! Lee holds a wealth of material ready, is completely in love with the noise of the big city behind the events, the street culture, the music. The most astonishing thing is that the self-proclaimed hunters pick out suspicious outsiders, but then still need confirmation of their "suspicion". In the end, everyone searches for Vinny to get this confirmation of who SAM is. If Vinny agrees with them, no one can blame them if they catch the wrong man. P.S. Who else would complain about the anonymity of our beautiful Kreuzberg/Neukölln when neighbourliness is revealed like in Summer Of Sam?
