"And the first angel sounded the trumpet and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood and the third part of the trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up." The Third Part Of The Night ist sein allererster Film. The second angel sounded the trumpet and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became blood. And the third part of those creatures died which had life in the sea and the third part of the ships was destroyed." Das Baby in The Third Part Of The Night, es ist Zulawski selbst. - "And the first angel sounded the trumpet and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood and the third part of the trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up." Reading about Zulawski is part of the good sound among cinephiles. Rarely do we get the chance to see him! The Third Part Of The Night is his very first movie. His characteristics, which will characterize all Zulawski movies, are already fully developed here: The movie dives into the emotional vortex of the main character Michael. We find ourselves in a subjective vision of memories, fantasy and reality - all blurred, blurred. In the same way historical time - Poland under Nazi rule - is transformed into a world full of suffering, redemption, apocalypse: "The second angel sounded the trumpet and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became blood. And the third part of those creatures died which had life in the sea and the third part of the ships was destroyed." The downfall is proclaimed, explicitly in the opening scene, as Michael's wife Helena reads the Revelation as the darkness approaches her house. They stay, because the couple has a young son and the grandparents are visiting. We learn that Michael has recovered from an illness for which he blames Helena. Michael's father also rejects Helena and waits in front of the house. Meanwhile Helena stares at herself in the mirror and seems to expect the outbreak of disaster... Like an explosion the violence breaks out! A German rider storms through the door - Michael's wife Helena, his son and his mother are killed with unbelievable cruelty. No explanation, no sense is offered to us: We experience killing in all its insignificance as part of a hostile universe. Michael's father turns to a merciless God who elevates evil above good. Zulawski shows the war through a surreal filter. The historical becomes a bizarre imagination on a metaphysical level. We know the facts that under the German occupation Polish intellectuals (like Zulawski's own father) were kept in Rudolf Weigl and only got lice as food. Scenes like these are used symbolically by Zulawski. The script was written by Zulawski with his father and is based on his own memories. Father Miroslaw was a diplomat and poet, Andrzej was born in Lwów. The baby in The Third Part Of The Night, it is Zulawski himself. After the murder of his family Michael returns to Lwów and fights underground against Germany. Zulawski's hectic handheld camera follows Michael during a failed operation as he dives into a sinister passage. The Gestapo arrests a man who is dressed exactly like Michael instead of him. This man is married to Marta, who looks exactly like dead Helena (Malgorzata Braunek in a double role) and is expecting a child. Michael now takes the place of the arrested... Zulawski is a filmmaker who deals honestly and deeply with the fate of the human soul. He perceives it violently torn apart. We experience the self-destructive that dwells within us in his films. Through his works we may be able to capture our dark longings. We do the filmmaker wrong by reducing him to his show values, his technical extravagances. Deep inside, Zulawski's cinema searches for mercy.
