- The project of the Berlin video library Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo goes like this: Collect all the good films that the video shop thinks of in dialogue with the customers, buy them and make them available for distribution. You can see our selection under "Featured Movies". According to my generation, I attach great importance to works from the 80s. There is still a lot to discover, for example Dead Calm, an Australian thriller from 1989, a picture of two boats floating side by side on the expanse of the ocean. Help, neither through technology nor through people, is not to be expected. In Dead Calm the protagonists have no choice but to take their fate into their own hands. On board the yacht is a couple trying to get over the death of their son. On board the other ship, a sinking schooner, is a stranger pretending to be shipwrecked. The husband doubts, examines the schooner and leaves his wife on the yacht - with a psychopathic killer... The whole movie is nothing more than a kind of strategy game of these three characters. Sam Neill plays the husband, Nicole Kidman his wife and Billy Zane is the killer with wild eyes. Over a long distance the husband sits trapped on the schooner, while the woman has to spend time with the killer on the yacht. A story so simple that it creates a thrilling tension. No film of small discoveries on the edge, here everything is designed for EFFECT. A note in passing: If you study wikipedia, you will notice that this project should already be realized by Orson_Welles, but the main actor died. Isn't that something! A never finished Welles movie with the very young Nicole Kidman! (transl. deepl.com)
