"She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up."; bemerkt Marlowe einmal über die nymphomanische kleine Schwester. - Two murders happened and the names of the dead are mentioned more often than those of the living. But does that really matter? And does it matter that there are another five (I think) murders? The Big Sleep is an insanely confusing Film Noir, based on the insanely confusing novel by Raymond Chandler. Little tip: Take notes if you really wanted to follow the plot. One thing seems certain: The Big Sleep is the most puzzling of all films! But that doesn't affect the thriller, because The Big Sleep is about investigations and not their results. We follow the private detective Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) through a morass of evidence. Surrounded by hustlers, murderers, thieves or white slavers. Sometimes they get killed or arrested, but it doesn't matter. Everyone has gathered around the rich general (Charles Waldron) and his two daughters (Lauren Bacall and Martha Vickers) The Bacall daughter is Vivian Sternwood Rutledge. And this is the only thing we really care about: When Marlowe and Vivian fall into each other's arms! We know that Bacall, in his early 20s and Bogart, in his 40s, were married. The great thing about The Big Sleep is that this classic has a tone that is so distant on the one hand, but on the other hand is ironic and humorous, sometimes even caring. A wickedly clever film noir! "She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up," Marlowe once remarked about the nymphomaniacal little sister. In The Big Sleep - as in many of the Hollywood classics of the time - there is a lot of talk. There is no action, only dialogue! A real dialogue marathon! Only today, thanks to the series Epidemic, we get used to such a lot of talking again! In The Big Sleep you can even talk about a dialogue contest: Who cultivates the best style? Maybe Martha Vickers as a little sister? And Bacall is always dry and reserved. As if she were assessing the man from a distance - not without amusement. It was to become her trademark. Her partner, Bogart, was short and rather ugly. What did he have to offer? He elevated his very personal style to an art form. Bogart always acted within a limited framework, but no actor from the 20th century can be remembered better! Perhaps, since he doesn't act at all. Bacall is his counterpart. There is a crackling between the two; you can see in Bogart's eyes how much he is in love. And finally, the idea of The Big Sleep is to perform unspeakable things while remaining calm. That's the definition of Film Noir: Keep it cool.

I thought it was great. The
I thought it was great. The dialogue is quick and fast-paced, keeps me on the edge of my seat, and Bogie is as cool as ever. A great film and a great addition to film noir.
