- A few years ago I visited my old friend Florian in Beijing. There we visited the restaurant of the North Korean Embassy. The waitresses were beautiful, but dismissive (although they smiled). Besides their task as waitress, they had a second one: At 20.00 they formed a synthie pop band in front of a disco ball and the picture of a North Korean mountain landscape. They played (quite tasty) synth pop (with propaganda lyrics, I think) outrageously loud. A Chinese businessman sat with his back to the stage, probably didn't know anything about these performances and almost spat out his food with shock. I thought, perhaps it is completely different in North Korea than we read in the newspaper? Perhaps even pleasant? Vitaly Mansky can find out now. He got a filming permit for one year in North Korea, the "happiest country in the world". Statues of the beloved leader everywhere; newspapers must not be folded, a picture of the leader could be broken. A documentary in the sense of an authentic observation might be difficult, because the shooting was supervised. Manksy therefore made the production strategy of the officials the theme of the film without further ado. He could smuggle some "messed up" scenes out of the country. In the ray of the sun not only looks at a bizarrely isolated country, but also acts as an educational film for propaganda. In the center, the pattern existence of a little girl and her relatives. The team enters a large apartment and knows that the family is only allowed to live in it for the duration of the shoot. The parents probably also entered their workplaces (by chance the flagship companies of the state) for the production for the first time. We see colourful set tables and afterwards children digging through the garbage on the street (probably a messed up scene). The sequences of the official screenplay: Of ghostly transparency. Repulsive, but also fascinating in it. In the ray of the sun, however, it's also funny: a veteran warrior full of medals tells his heroic story to schoolchildren - the camera is particularly interested in the child who constantly dozes off. The infinitely sad ending about the little girl must also be one of the messed up scenes... If I take Florian to the North Korean embassy restaurant again, I know who paid the bill.
