- I'm shocked, I'm having a laughing fit! I just saw Emir Kusturica's underground. Please take the title literally. Once upon a time... during the Nazi invasion of Maribor, as a small shelter dug up against the German occupying forces, it expanded into an astonishing tunnel system. In 169 minutes of filming all the main cities of Europe are connected to each other. Berlin, the Balkans, Athens, the subroute. The manhole cover is opened and "Dem deutschen Volke" is read at the Reichstag. Then the Bosnian-Croatian massacre comes to light again. Below is an insanely dense traffic, which leads to high pollution (Hitler is to blame for this, who measured the fans wrongly). Downstairs is Marko, the criminal and his wife. Towards the end we experience them in the Mercedes. A dealer in a wheelchair, comrades of Tito, a grey horse and a landscape like that of Hieronymos Bosch. So we are right in the middle of Kusturica's world, the - "Underground!" - penetrates the depths of the soul. The history of Yugoslavia, all just propaganda and staging. Are we discovering the truth in this tissue of lies? Maybe his inventiveness is also a handicap curicas? There are so many characters and locations that you simply stray from the path. Is there even a familiar element to be found in the underground? The underlying story is just as weird as the surface of the images invading us. At least I have to take a few hours to pick this parabola apart. When does the party end? When does the war start? In any case, Kusturica's work applies to all nations - not only Yugoslavia.
