- Whoever thinks that the time of conspiracy theories is today, forgets what was considered possible in the late 70s: UFOs, Bigfoot, the Bermuda Triangle... That's why you'll find a number of big budget Hollywood productions dealing with conspiracy theories. Peter Hyam's Capricorn One is about a manned trip to Mars, but we all know what it's really about, don't we? The image of the man pushing the American flag into the bottom of the newly discovered planet combined with the question: "What if the greatest event in human history never really happened?" What if it had all been staged against a backdrop? Rumours of this kind have circulated around the moon landing since 1969... At the beginning of the film we see Capricorn One on the launch pad - still part of the Apollo programme. James Brolin is Brubaker, harbouring miral doubts, Sam Waterston is Willis, the joker, and OJ Simpson, the expendable. These astronauts are told that a real trip to Mars would mean the death of them all. But since the mission should not fail under any circumstances, everything is to be staged in an old warehouse. An almost surrealistic idea with wonderfully stupid dialogue. Spacemen playing with children's cars.
