- What bad luck! Moana could be a huge box-office success, but appears at a strange time. The latest Walt Disney musical is about Moana, a young woman who finds her own voice and builds her own identity. She would rather be a strong leader than a stereotypical princess in distress. It has both: respect for tradition, but also the will to blow it over for the future. Moana becomes the first female "president" - and that is the irony of fate after the last US elections. Moana grows up on the beautiful South Sea island of Motuni, but none of the inhabitants there explore the oceans any more. Only Moana's granny knows the myths of her ancestors, in which dark gods and powers reigned. When it comes to a natural disaster, all fish disappear and the coconuts become bitter, a darkness settles over the island. If the Polynesians used to be a seafaring people, they have lost this ability long ago, Grandma Moana instructs them. Moana is now the only one who can save the island! She paddles out to sea in a canoe and meets the demigod Maui, who stands by her side with a magic fish hook. Slowly they approach (supposedly) evil... A must for boys and girls from the team that once led Disney Studios out of the crisis (who remembers Arielle?). A whole series of characters appear here and just as lovingly the green-blue shades vary under water. As always with Disney there are a lot of vocal numbers and in parts Moana looks like a musical. Moana herself, a strong and curvy girl (and not anorexic princess) is ready for any task that awaits her. Even for the duck Heihei, who stands by her like an industrial accident. (transl. deepl.com)
