- Sometimes I read the plot of a movie and then I can't possibly imagine that I could get used to it. The starting situation of Valley Of Love is such a case: An elderly couple, separated for a long time, spends a week together in Death Valley at the deceased son's request. The cast of Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert did the rest that I normally would have taken a break. And then the bad title Valley Of Love! We hear Charles Ives The Unanswered Question, a piece that seems to have been composed for this film. It expresses the web of open questions and feelings that are now being raised in the Valley of Death. Huppert plays Isabelle, whose son has killed himself. Why did he do that? Perhaps because she had turned away from him early on? Is he dead at all? The son Michael wrote two letters before his suicide. One to the father Gerard, one to the mother Isabelle, with instructions to arrive in Death Valley on a certain date. If they did so, he would appear to them one last time... Isabelle almost delusionally clings to the return of the son. Such questions are alien to the father: "Of course they would be responsible for the death of the son, after all they would also have given him life. The Unanswered Question superimposes different levels that sound together: A single trumpet over the maze of strings. The film by Guillaume Nicloux works in a similar way, which is mainly due to the setting of Death Valley. Here the border between fiction and reality becomes porous. Isabelle hopes for a miracle, Gerard just trudges up and down sweating. Are we experiencing with them the spirits that will not let you go for a lifetime? Was I wrong about the movie?
