Ich musste an den "Joker" denken, der mit seinen Lachanfällen gegen jeden Anstand und jede gute Sitte verstösst. Der Mensch ist das einzige Tier, das lachen kann. Aber wer über There's Something About Mary verstösst gegen ziemlich viele Gebote politischer Korrektheit. Hier geht's um eine geschmacklose Komödie mit ca. sechs explosiven Lachern. Also sechs Lachern, die dich zum "Joker" mutieren lassen. Das sind Szenen, in denen der Film die Kontrolle über dich übernimmt. Du wirst Opfer einer körperlichen Reaktion = Lachkrampf. Das ist keine intellektuelle Reaktion. Du darfst befreit Ablachen und das tut gut. Guter Geschmack war nie die Stärke von Peter und Bobby Farrelly (also als Team während den 90ern). Sie machen Witze über blinde Kinder, deren Wellensittich mit Tape festgeklebt wird. Und über eine schöne und reine und sonnige Frau, in die sich eine Reihe von Widerlingen verliebt. Sie heisst Mary (Cameron Diaz). Mary ist so nett, dass sie sogar Ted (Ben Stiller) nicht abweist, obwohl er eine Zahnspange trägt. Dummerweise aber muss Ted feststellen, dass man Reissverschlüsse und Teile der männlichen Anatomie niemals kreuzen sollte. Und daraus basteln die Farrelly Brüder dann eine Kette von Steigerungen. Ein Unglück reicht nicht, es MUSS mehr geben und es MUSS schlimmer werden. Dreizehn Jahre später ist Ted immer noch in Mary verliebt. Er heuert den schmierigen Privat-Detektiv Healy (Matt Dillon) an, der Mary in Miami findet. Wir wollen Ted zurufen, dass er niemals einem Privat-Detektiv mit Schnurrbart vertrauen darf! Doch daran hindert uns die vierte Dimension des Kinos. Jedenfalls ist Mary immer noch Single. Healy belauscht Mary und findet alles heraus, was ihr wichtig ist. Zum Beispiel ihr behinderter Bruder Warren (W. Earl Brown). Wenn man Warren an den Ohren anfasst, geschieht Katastrophales. Wie jede gute Komödie verzichtet There's Something About Mary ansonsten auf so etwas wie eine Handlung. Sie dient einfach nur dem Zweck, Gag an Gag zu reihen. Das Beste daran: Hinter den ohrenbetäubenden Lachern versteckt sich echte Romantik. Fällt dir das auf? Das ist die Stärke der Farrelly Brothers! Ablachen + Romanze. Es ist für jeden etwas dabei. - I had to think of the "Joker", who with his fits of laughter is against all decency and good manners. Man is the only animal that can laugh. But whoever talks about There's Something About Mary violates quite a few precepts of political correctness. This is a tasteless comedy with about six explosive laughs. That is six laughs that can turn you into a wild card. These are scenes where the film takes control of you. You become the victim of a physical reaction = laughing fit. It's not an intellectual reaction. You are allowed to laugh freely and that feels good. Good taste was never the strength of Peter and Bobby Farrelly (as a team during the 90s). They make jokes about blind children whose budgie is taped. And about a beautiful and pure and sunny woman with whom a bunch of creeps fall in love. Her name is Mary (Cameron Diaz). Mary is so nice that she even doesn't reject Ted (Ben Stiller), even though he wears braces. Unfortunately, Ted realizes that zippers and parts of the male anatomy should never be crossed. And out of this, the Farrelly Brothers make a chain of enhancements. One mishap is not enough, there MUST be more and it MUST get worse. Thirteen years later, Ted is still in love with Mary. He hires the sleazy private detective Healy (Matt Dillon) to find Mary in Miami. We want to shout out to Ted that he can never trust a private detective with a mustache! But that's what the fourth dimension of cinema prevents us from doing. Anyway, Mary is still single. Healy overhears Mary and finds out everything she cares about. For example her handicapped brother Warren (W. Earl Brown). If you touch Warren by the ears, catastrophic things happen. Like every good comedy, There's Something About Mary otherwise refrains from something like a plot. It simply serves the purpose of putting gag after gag. Best of all, behind the deafening laughter there is real romance. You notice that? That's the Farrelly Brothers' strength! Laughter + Romance. There's something for everybody.
