Hier kommt das pompöse Sequel zu The Wizard of Oz (DVD2192) in in Munchkinland, der Emerald City oder dem Campus der Shiz Universität - dort wo Elphaba, die böse Hexe aus dem Westen und Glinda, die gute Hexe aus dem Norden zum ersten Mal aufeinander treffen. Das ist ein klassischer Fantasy Stoff, angesiedelt in einer ganz eigenen Welt mit eigenen Regeln. Er nimmt sich Zeit, ja viel Zeit, um gut zu sein. Er erschlägt uns nicht mit einfachem Nervenkitzel, sondern erzählt seine Geschichte. Eben nicht nur ein Film, sondern eine Welt mit einfachen Regeln und viel Magie. Wicked hat ein grosses Herz, angetrieben von Cynthia Erivo und Ariana Grande. Versprochen wird uns ein Eskapismus in rosa und grün, doch dahinter gibt es viel mehr zu entdecken. Viel mehr Tiefe und Dunkelheit. Zum Glück können Cynthia Erivo und Ariana Grande auch noch angemessen singen. Im Tanz entsteht ein Band der Freundschaft. Die Verbindung beider ist echt - stellt die Grundlage von Wicked dar - und so wird ihre Zerstörung sinnvoll. Vieles wissen wir bereits, etwa, dass der Zauberer von Oz ein Hochstapler ist, der durch Angst regiert. Buchstäblich tarnt er sich mit Rauch und Spiegeln. Es ist eine Welt, in der Minderheiten gejagt und in Käfige gesperrt werden. Sehr subtil ist das nicht und es wirkt auch ein bisschen zu aktuell für ein Märchen. Vorlage ist der 95er Roman The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, eine Art Alternative zu The Wizard of Oz. Der Film konzentriert sich auf die frühen Jahre von Wicked und auf die zwei angehenden Hexen. Elphaba (Erivo), die später zur bösen Hexe des Westens werden soll und die etwas eitles Galinda (Grande), die mal die gute Hexe wird. Beide sind neu an der Shiz Universität. Elphaba und Galinda werden Zimmer-Genossinnen (und finden das beide gleich schlimm) und siehe da... nach einiger Zeit echte Freundinnen. Eine Freundschaft, die sich - wie wir wissen - noch entwickeln soll zu... tja, gut oder böse, denn dazwischen gibts schliesslich nichts. We are promised escapism in pink and green, but there is much more to discover behind it. Much more depth and darkness. Fortunately, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande can also sing appropriately. A bond of friendship is formed in dance. The connection between the two is real - represents the foundation of Wicked - and so their destruction becomes meaningful. Much we already know, such as that the Wizard of Oz is an impostor who rules through fear. Literally, he disguises himself with smoke and mirrors. It's a world in which minorities are hunted down and locked in cages. It's not very subtle and it also seems a bit too topical for a fairy tale. It is based on the 95 novel The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a kind of alternative to The Wizard of Oz. The movie focuses on the early years of Wicked and on the two budding witches. Elphaba (Erivo), who will later become the Wicked Witch of the West, and the somewhat vain Galinda (Grande), who will one day become the Good Witch. Both are new to Shiz University. Elphaba and Galinda become roommates (and both think it's equally bad) and lo and behold... After a while, they become real friends. A friendship that - as we know - is yet to develop into... well, good or bad, because there's nothing in between. Or is there?
