"I'm going to get you"; verspricht er Stewart und uriniert auf dessen Schuhe. - In Mike Nichols Wolf Jack Nicholson plays Will Randall, the top editor of a renowned New York publishing house, who is bitten by a werewolf. An almost helpful incident, as Nicholson's honorably managed publishing house is taken over by a billionaire who wants to replace Will with an unscrupulous yuppie. We are already in the middle of the classic werewolf theme. The full moon is given special importance, horses become shy in the presence of Will and of course the werewolf smells if someone had a tequila for breakfast. There is the eccentric doctor who enlightens Will about the nature of the wolf and last but not least there is a beautiful woman who desires the animal in man. But Mike Nichols Wolf goes even further and provides an insightful portrait of modern publishing. Nichols seriously examines what becomes of a New York editor when the wolf bites him. At first Will seems tired and old. His authors are loyal to him. When the investor (Christopher Plummer) takes over the publishing house, he tells Will during a garden party that he is fired. His supposed friend Stewart Swinton (James Spader) will succeed him. And what a beautiful hypocrite this Stewart is! But Will gains a new confidante: Laura (Michelle Pfeiffer), the daughter of the investor. Will's tone is always wise and well-read; but after the bite he becomes more and more predatory. "I'm going to get you"; he promises Stewart and urinates on his shoes. The wolf marks his territory. From then on, Will grows stronger and stronger and looks much younger. There's no need to explain that Lauran becomes his mistress. After all she hates her father and pursues similar goals as Will. A classic horror movie didn't come out of it, of course. Nor is it a real romance. But a Werewolf movie in an unfamiliar environment.
