Ein Film, motiviert durch blosses Glück. Regisseurin Crystal Moselle ging die Strasse entlang, als sechs junge Männer mit schwarzen Anzügen und Sonnenbrillen ihr entggegen kamen. Moselle drehte sich instinktiv um und fragte die Sechs nach ihrer Geschichte: Die Angulo Brüder führten sie in ihr winziges Apartment, das sie sich mit einer schüchternen Mutter und einem aggressiven Vater teilten. Eine Wohnung, die sie fast nie verlassen durften, aufgrund der Furcht des Vaters vor dem echten Leben (machmal verliessen sie die Wohnung während eines Jahres nur wenige Mal, teilweise überhaupt nicht). Die Angulo Brüder durften aber Filme sehen und besassen etwa 5000 DVDs und Videokassetten. Sie folgten ihrer Obsession für die Filme, spielten sie Szene für Szene nach. Moselle mochte die jungen Männer auf Anhieb und es wäre auch schwer, das nicht zu tun. Die Sechs sind sanftmütige, freundliche junge Männer geworden, mit Trauer in ihren Blicken, wenn sie die eigene Geschichte erzählen. Oft stellt Moselle ihnen offene Fragen und lässt die Angulo Brüder ihren eigenen Weg gehen, sie zu beantworten. Diese Methode kann allerdings auch frustrierend wirken, da manchmal der Eindruck entsteht, die Brüder hätten die Regie des Films übernommen. Während einiger Passagen fehlt es Moselle auch an einer Idee, die Geschichte zum Laufen zu bringen. Das liegt daran, dass sie die Charaktere der Sechs nicht weiter entwickelt. Es ist auffällig, dass sich die Angulo Brüder vor allem mit sehr männlichen Filmen identifizieren - obwohl ein männliches Vorbild in ihrer Umgebung fehlt. Manchmal wäre es auch interessant, ob die Emotionen, welche die Brüder vortragen, ihre eigenen sind oder abgeschaut aus Filmen? Vieles funktioniert aber auch in The Wolfpack, vor allem der Moment, wenn die Jungs ängstlich nach draussen treten in die echte Welt. Moselle portraitiert die Jungs in dem Moment, da sie noch zögerlich mit der neuen Situation draussen umgehen. Sie nähert sich der Vergangenheit deshalb nicht so tief an, wie es womöglich nötig gewesen wäre. Genau das ist der kleine Unterschied, der eine gute Doku von einer grossartigen unterscheidet. - A film motivated by sheer luck. Moselle instinctively turned around and asked the Six about their story: The Angulo brothers led them to their tiny apartment, which they shared with a shy mother and an aggressive father. An apartment they were almost never allowed to leave due to their father's fear of real life (sometimes they left the apartment only a few times during the year, sometimes not at all). However, the Angulo brothers were allowed to watch films and owned about 5000 DVDs and video cassettes. They followed their obsession for the films, acting scene by scene. Moselle liked the young men right away and it would also be difficult not to do that. The Six have become gentle, friendly young men, with sad eyes as they tell their own story. Moselle often asks them open questions and lets the Angulo brothers go their own way to answer them. However, this method can also be frustrating, as sometimes the impression is created that the brothers have taken over the direction of the film. During some passages Moselle also lacks an idea to make the story work. That's because she's not developing the characters of the six. It is striking that the Angulo brothers identify primarily with very male films - although a male role model is missing in their environment. Sometimes it would also be interesting whether the emotions the brothers present are their own or copied from films? But many things also work in The Wolfpack, especially the moment when the guys step fearfully outside into the real world. Moselle portrays the boys the moment they are still hesitant about the new situation outside. It is therefore not approaching the past as deeply as it might have been necessary. That's the small difference between a good documentary and a great one.
