Trailer
- Wonderland tells the story of three sisters from South London. It tells of husbands, children, blind dates and loneliness, because all three sisters feel lonely. They are looking for someone who will simply do the right thing. Are they unusual people? Are they unusual people? I think most people aren't very happy usually. That's why Michael Winterbottom's Wonderland argues that people invented sex, sports and television. That's why Wonderland is not stringent. The plot seems to go round and round. Life is just not a story, it's a process. Reality doesn't follow a Hollywood curve towards a happy ending either. Normally films work according to the motto: How can they amuse, touch, scare me (...)? Wonderland is different. It is not about me, but about these three sisters. Wonderland is about people. These people are not me, but they are around me. Maybe they are customers in our video store. The sisters are called Nadia (Gina McKee), Molly (Molly Parker) and Debbie (Shirley Henderson). Nadia works in a cafe in Soho. Debbie is a hairdresser and Molly is pregnant by a man who suffers from a strong inferiority complex. We meet her parents, too. These are people who bully others, sneak out at night to poison the neighbour's dog. There may be moments of happiness, like when the neighbour from the Caribbean comes over for a dance. But then there's all that work and you just feel too tired... Life happens in moments. Michael Winterbottom traces them. He's very attentive. He wants to know how people live and feel. In Wonderland we're not supposed to be entertained, we become curious about these people. Wonderland doesn't have a greater purpose. But with this he would also betray himself.
