The day the earth stood still (1951) dagegen propagiert eine friedliche Botschaft. - Orson Welles' radio play War of the worlds caused a mass panic on the east coast in 1938. It all sounded so real that people wanted to protect themselves from intruders from outer space. After all, the USA in the 1950s was a paranoid country, marked by the fear of the boundless spread of communism: The thing (1951) expresses the fear of this red attack. The day the earth stood still (1951), on the other hand, propagates a peaceful message. If mankind clings to the atomic bomb, it may have to be destroyed for reasons of reason. In War of the worlds (1953) the inhabitants of the earth are completely powerless against the Martians, even the atomic bomb is ineffective. Don Siegel's Invasion of the body snatchers was understood as an allegory of communism and also of McCarthy's totalitarian activities. Siegel himself remarked that it was inevitable to think of McCarthy. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers is a beautifully naive product of the UFO hysteria of time. The aliens of the decades to come became more expensive and scientific. Ridley Scott's Alien is a chamber play of horror. The primal fear of man, a nasty little beast sucks its mouth and takes over the whole organ system. Spielberg's Close encounters of the third kind, on the other hand, is a fairy tale in the tradition of Disney. Salvation from space as an answer to all human problems. Mars Attacks by Tim Burton and Men in black stand for Alien Fun. In Mars Attacks, the world is dominated by money-hungry and incompetent idiots, as if one of the 50s alien invasions had been successful. But the Martians invade, the American flag is burned, dogs are slaughtered and in the end Mexican Mariachis play in the ruins of Washington. Men in Black is a pretty cool blockbuster who doesn't share Burton's subversive mischief at all, but constantly jumps at new alien ideas. Black-dressed immigration agents who take care of the intergalactic scum. Also undesirable are the scrap-eating aliens in District 9, a South African alien movie with enough political explosive. Shot in the eyewitness style of the Mockumentary, aliens are crammed together in the township and used by an apartheid regime to make a profit. The first postmodern alien classic!
