Hannes Stöhrs Berlin Is In Germany wurde 2001 gedreht. - A man is released from prison. Accompanied by pathetic music that sounds as if "Ennio Morricone" himself had played along. The idea of Berlin Is In Germany sounds as simple as it is provocative: This man, who was imprisoned shortly before the reunification and is released in 2001, must remind himself that he is still here in his city Berlin. And "Berlin Is In Germany". 30 years have passed since we were surrounded by a Berlin Wall. Hannes Stoehr's Berlin Is In Germany was shot in 2001. That was the time when we were just starting to deal with East and West in a film. The first film art bar Fitzcarraldo was still located in Friedrichshain, in the eastern part of Berlin. For the guests there, Berlin Is In Germany was a big hit. At the centre of it all is a real CINEMA idea: a prisoner from East Berlin leaves prison in 2001, eleven years after the fall of the Wall. He finds himself in a completely new city. This off beat comedy is one of the films that can translate a regionally based plot for foreign countries! For when the 38-year-old machinist Martin Schultz (DEFA star Jorg Schuttauf), who was imprisoned for an accidental murder in the Berlin Brandenburg Prison, is released, he hardly recognizes the new Berlin anymore. All full of construction cranes! Obstacles everywhere, for example the BVG vending machine that doesn't swallow its East German Mark. Martin meets old friends from the lost GDR, like the taxi driver from Cuba. He tries to get back in touch with his ex-wife Maneula (Julia Jager) and his son. She now lives with a yuppie in the rich south of West Berlin. Martin is driven off the villa property, but he is not the type to give up. Martin falls back on old friendships, works in a sex shop and becomes friends with Ludmila (Edita Malovcic). But fate will put him to the test once again... Do you know this kind of movie you always want to see again? Berlin Is In Germany is such a movie. How Martin is such a nice guy! And because of the scene in which a couple of Nazis get their faces bashed! And because of the pompous "Italo Western" soundtrack.
