Indignation des langjährigen amerikanischen Indie Produzenten James Schamus, ist ein Film, der so rigoros aus der Reihe tanzt (und zwar aus der, welche man als "Indie" so bezeichnet), dass es fast herausfordernd wirkt! Die Verfilmung des Romans von Philip Roth folgt den Themen seines Spätwerks: Vergänglichkeit, das Unvermeidbare. Im Mittelpunkt: Der vielversprechende junge Mann namens Marcus Messner aus New Jersey. Ausgezeichnet mit einem Stipendium am College von Ohio, kann man ihn als hingebungsvollen Menschen und aussergewöhnlichen Studenten bezeichnen. Er schwört auf seine intellektuelle Unabhängigkeit. Sexuell können wir ihn als naiv einordnen - klar! Wir schreiben das Jahr 1951. Marcus tritt einer jüdischen Studentenverbindung bei und verfolgt eifrig sein Studium. Dann lernt er die verführerische und brillante Olivia (Sarah Gadon) kennen. Sie züchtigt Marcus: “You are not a simple soul and you have no business being here.” - und auf tragische Weise soll sie Recht behalten... Auf fast feierliche Art und Weise folgt der Film dem Roman. Äusserst ruhig, die gesamte "Action" beschränkt sich tiefe innige Gespräche. Mit Hingabe zelebriert Schamus diese, seine Stilübung und Roths Vorlage. Logan Lerman spielt Marcus äusserst liebenswürdig - auch dann noch, wenn er sich unausstehlich aufführt. Sarah Gadon als Olivia hat mich umgehauen! Eine junge Frau, die sich selbst genau kennt und dennoch in dunkle Abgründe abgleitet. Die ganze Empörung, die in Roths Vorlage deutlich wird, spüren wir auch im Film. Manchmal scheints mir fast so, als ob Schamus noch einmal Öl ins Feuer giesst! - Indignation by long-time American indie producer James Schamus, is a film that dances so rigorously out of the series (and out of what you call the "indie") that it almost seems challenging! The film adaptation of Philip Roth's novel follows the themes of his late work: transience, the unavoidable. In focus: The promising young man named Marcus Messner from New Jersey. Awarded a scholarship to the College of Ohio, he can be described as a dedicated person and an exceptional student. He swears by his intellectual independence. Sexually we can classify him as naive - sure! It's 1951. Marcus joins a Jewish fraternity and eagerly pursues his studies. Then he meets the seductive and brilliant Olivia (Sarah Gadon). She punishes Marcus: "You are not a simple soul and you have no business being here." - and tragically, she shall be proved right... The film follows the novel in an almost solemn way. Extremely quiet, the entire "action" is limited to deep, intimate conversations. With devotion, Schamus celebrates this, his style exercise and Roth's model. Logan Lerman plays Marcus very graciously - even when he is acting insufferably. Sarah Gadon as Olivia knocked me out! A young woman who knows herself well and yet slips into dark abysses. All the indignation that becomes clear in Roth's original we also feel in the film. Sometimes it seems to me almost as if Shame pours more oil on the fire!
